Valkyrie featured in Daily Mail: Managing Director David Webb reveals the real reason celebrities are burglary targets

Celebrities are known to be prime targets for burglars due to their high profile lifestyles, lavish houses and expensive possessions. Yet, it is assumed that they can be difficult to rob due to the various security measures they employ to avoid exactly that. However, in a new article in Daily Mail, Valkyrie’s Managing Director David Webb says that is far from the case. In fact, they themselves could be responsible for the burglaries that take place.

Whether it is the CCTV cameras, your fitness watches, your smart gadgets, the internet or even the electoral register, everything can be used by robbers to learn about your day to day life. The biggest reason for these burglaries, however, is social media — the biggest source of information about celebrities themselves.

When speaking about the issue of security with the Daily Mail, David, who served in the UK special forces, explained that it is easier now more than ever to hack or burgle someone’s house — even if they are celebrities.

“The criminal thinks, let’s put a tracker on the vehicle and find out where it’s going,” David tells the Daily Mail. “From that, he’ll get an idea of the ins and outs of the household. Then he’ll start mapping security. Has it got a CCTV, an alarm, other security features? Ultimately work out whether this place is worth targeting.”

It’s never been easier to invade your home. And according to Matthew Newton, Valkyrie’s Director of Crisis Response, “it’s not just someone coming in through a door or a window. They can get into it without ever physically being there”.

Through social media, people can figure out your exact location from the Instagram photos you post, or find out when you’re not home based on real-time Instagram stories. In fact, there are many instances of celebrities posting images and videos of the various renovations and workings inside their homes, making it easy for a criminal to map out their plan.

Most of all, they know how to exploit the criminal and judicial system, Matthew tells the Dail Mail: “With police forces stretched thin, property-related offences often take a back seat. This means that sophisticated burglary gangs can operate with a sense of impunity, knowing that response times are slow and prosecution rates low.”

Valkyrie, which is part of the Quantum Group,  is a security investigations firm that specialises in providing physical and cyber protection, among other security services, for wealthy clients and businesses. They employ the use of clever hidden gadgets and high-end technology to provide ultra high net worth individuals with the security they desire.

You can’t truly vet someone 100% in the digital world, says Matthew. But you can do everything in your power to prevent becoming the next victim of a physical or cyber crime with Valkyrie.
